ABOUT ME
Judy is a Taiwanese-American contemporary painter based in Hong Kong. Using a Chinese Western lens, her practice explores the intersections of culture, heritage, and identity across the past, present, and future. Working in saturated, exaggerated color, she uses imagery from urban and oceanic landscapes, the everyday, the overlooked, evoking nostalgia and creating a memory that exists between reality and non-reality. Her paintings question perception, perspective, a sense of longing and belonging - exposing glossy facades we construct, that often obscure the authenticity of our inner world and how inherited culture shapes our behaviors and life choices. For Judy, art begins with honesty: encouraging truth, confronting shadow, de-labelling, radical unlearning. Her work invites self-exploration, where art has the power to lead us on a path of transcendence. She hopes to leave a mark of hope and healing where divisions dissolve.
Judy holds an M.S. in Communications Design from Pratt Institute, New York, and dual B.A. degrees in Studio Arts and Economics from Wellesley College, where she completed a thesis in Painting. Her first group exhibition at Wellesley featured a series exploring translucency and transparency—an inquiry that continues to shape her practice today. These themes surface in her open water swimming series, and more conceptually in her donut works, which juxtapose glossy, superficial exteriors with the complexities of inner worlds. She began her career as a graphic designer in New York, painting alongside her professional work. In 2014, while living in Shanghai, she opened her first studio, marking a decisive turn toward full-time artistic practice. Now based in Hong Kong, Judy has exhibited in group shows at Parallel Space Gallery in Sham Shui Po and contributed to several charity auctions, including one for the Design Trust Foundation in conjunction with Art Basel 2025. Her two solo exhibitions at PMQ in Central, Hong Kong, culminated most recently in Underneath the Glaze, a series of large-scale donut paintings that transcend their subject matter to probe themes of desire, identity, and reflection. Judy is currently developing a new body of work exploring more spiritual elements activating her feminine lens, while experimenting new techniques in preparation for her third solo exhibition.
